The CU Boulder Science Discovery STEM Research Experience is a seven-week commuter program designed for rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Students are paired with faculty and graduate student mentors from CU Boulder and CU Anschutz Medical Campus to engage in authentic, hands-on research projects in a lab or field setting. Participants will gain practical experience in conducting literature reviews, exploring library resources, collecting and analyzing data, and communicating scientific results. The program includes a weekly Research Methods Seminar where students delve into topics such as reading scientific papers, data visualization, scientific writing, and creating effective scientific posters. The experience culminates in a poster session where students present their research findings. Successful completion of the program earns students a STEM Research Methods micro-credential from the University of Colorado Boulder, affirming their foundational skills in the scientific process.
Students work approximately 20 hours per week on their research project, with hours varying based on lab needs, and also participate in a weekly Research Methods Seminar.
